"Discipline is remembering what you want." – David Campbell

MiSook Kim, Artist Biography

Background

My art is in a sense an extension of what I strive to achieve in my life – balance. In my art, I can move the colors around and change the composition and lighting so that in the end, there is harmony. Life is not so easily manipulated, but just like life, the outcome of art can never be certain until you're finally there.

Random things and experiences become sources of inspiration. I generally put a lot of thought behind every piece. I usually like to go through the sketching and concepting process before finalizing my pieces, but sometimes, they are more spontaneous and turn out to be better (or worse) than what I planned. When I paint something that makes me smile, I feel uplifted and that's what I want my art to do for everyone who experiences it. I want people to feel good when they see my work.

My style tends to be loose, but maintains realism. I find the greatest joy in the nuances of brushstrokes and the unexpected beauty created by mixing paint quickly and painting loosely.

I was born in Seoul, Korea and at the age of two, my family and I moved to Atlanta, Georgia. I graduated from the University of Georgia with a BFA in graphic design and now work full-time as a senior graphic designer for an interactive marketing agency.

Influences

My mother was my greatest influence of all. She always encouraged and supported my artistic endeavors. Her house was like my personal gallery because she hung everything I ever created since birth and bragged about them whenever she had a new visitor (my embarrassment made no difference to her whatsoever). She died of cancer a few years ago, but because she never once doubted my abilities and because she gave me so much through her strength and character, I have the courage to dream of art as a career.

My Art

Watercolor and water-soluble oil paints are my favorite painting mediums. I like everything from the soft subtleties of watercolor to the bold and thick marks of oil paint.

All different styles of art intrigue me including impressionistic, abstract, hyper-realistic, cartoon, and CGI. I'm open to trying anything in my work.

The brush is my favorite tool, but the graphic designer in me craves to explore the computer as another artistic tool. Some of my work which began as a hand-painted piece have been finalized in the digital realm, although a funny side effect of painting on the computer is that sometimes when I'm working on a true canvas, I mentally reach for the "undo" button.

Miscellaneous Personal Facts

I love my cat, Itty Bitty. Some things I enjoy besides art are dining out, gardening, decorating, shopping, watching movies, and traveling. My favorite foods are Indian, Korean, Japanese, and Italian. I don't have a favorite color because I love all colors!
